Wentworth Castle & Stainborough Park
Wentworth Castle & Stainborough Park Heritage Trust
Stainborough Park, near Barnsley, has a long history reaching back beyond the great changes initiated by Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford (2nd creation). The gardens, park and Castle itself all bear evidence of centuries of development. The Georgians (Thomas and his son William) perhaps made the most significant structural changes to the site, providing a framework within which later additions still remain. This complex history, combined with a landscape in active agricultural management, and rich with biodiversity, have made it an inspiring and challenging place to visit and work with.
Starting in 2004, Erika had a key role in the Hilary Taylor Landscape Associates Ltd team on the development of a greater understanding of the gardens and park, and proposals for the first phase of the restoration of the site, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage (among others). This included contributing to the Conservation Plan (2005), leading the Parkland Management Plan (2006), contributing to the Woodland Management Plan (2006) and support for the submission of a number of successful grant applications. Erika was also part of the design team for the restoration works, and managed the implementation of the landscape restoration scheme completed in 2007. The wider, award-winning project included major works within the gardens, including an accessible route from the new visitor centre through a new garden, two new car parks, transformation of the parkland with two new woodlands planted, deer reintroduced, a new network of footpaths and improved management for conservation and wildlife, as well as major building restoration works. In 2008-9, she helped to lead the design of a project to restore the Victorian Conservatory and surrounding area that was successful in gaining further funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
